I just watched some videos on ACTA.

I mean, I knew it was bad, but I didn’t really understand what it was about.

Now that I know, I’m actually terrified. It takes away our civil liberties (no matter what country you live in), censors us, places us under constant surveillance, and can either land us in prison, get us fined, or completely disconnect us from the Internet for simply including copyrighted materials in out own user generated content.

You have a video with copyrighted music in the background? You’ll get into trouble.

You photoshop and image and place it online? You’ll get into trouble.

You share ONE Mp3 file over IM with a friend? You’ll get into trouble.

It turns our ISPs into, effectively, police. They will monitor everything that we do on the Internet, and can trace it back to us. There will be no more anonymity on the Internet. They will know where you are, and they will find you.

And this goes way beyond the Internet, guys. This also affects the medicine and other industries.

Say a certain type of drug is copyrighted; companies will be forbidden to produce generic versions of the same drug. This means that people will be forced to pay top dollar for drugs that do exactly the same thing—they just slap a brand name on it and charge more. This means people will be unable to afford medicine.

As a result of some of the restrictions that ACTA will impose, people could die.

What is ACTA?

Why you should say “NO” to ACTA

SIGN THE PETITION AND SAY NO TO ACTA

ACTA makes me feel like I live in some dystopian novel. “1984”, anyone? If this goes through then I’ll probably stop using the internet for fun.
